Designing Digital Media for the Internet of Things is a new public-private consortium led by KMDI and the Faculty of Information, and includes members from four local universities, eight digital media content companies, and the Ontario trade organization Interactive Ontario.

The group has been organized to address the movement from screen-based digital media to more environmental and embodied forms of digital interactions. DDiMIT uses hands-on workshops, roundtables, and showcase events to explore novel developments in digital media and the 'internet of things'.

It accomplishes this through three mechanisms: First, DDiMIT provides to consortium members a platform consisting of a physical space and tools for hands-on workshops, collaborations, and showcase events.  Second, the consortium is developing a virtual space for disseminating the work of local media companies, and sustaining knowledge sharing and exchange between consortium members. Third, DDiMIT will also explore possible models for long-term sustainable support for its mission.

DDiMIT Workshops

DDiMIT workshops have already garnered sustained interest from the wider academic and business communities. Rather than focusing on generating new products and technologies, the aim of these workshops is to use design methods and prototyping to develop the skills and perspectives necessary to build capacity in this growing area of digital media design.

First Workshop (November 2009) - Tweeting Infrastructure Making for the Basic Internet of Things (TIMBITs)
Second Workshop (March 2010) - Wearables and Digital Media
Third Workshop (October 2010) - Digital Desktop Fabrication
